This session, co-hosted by the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation - University of Patras (LMS), is expected to inform and raise awareness concerning the advantages of digital manufacturing technologies in the European Industry, focusing on the management of engineering knowledge throughout the product lifecycle. It will investigate the relevant ontology-based frameworks under development by several FoF-ICT projects for possible cross fertilization and interoperable re-use across different application areas, as well as for discussing the current technological limitations for sharing knowledge in the value chain. The objectives of this session are in line with the European Commission’s targets for infrastructures, technologies and services and for the next generation computing as described in Horizon2020 as well as in Pillar II (Interoperability & Standards) of the Digital Agenda. Given that knowledge-based systems have seen a boost recently, this session is expected to nurture actions for innovation support (including standardisation) and future RTD initiatives.

Manufacturing end-users, software developers and researchers are anticipated to take part in this session. End-users, and especially SMEs, will benefit from improving key performance values, such as faster process design, time to market and the associated costs and also by improving their processes from a human-centric point of view (affecting both engineers and operators). The developers and researchers will benefit from on-going and future initiatives related to the topic of knowledge management, since they will be primarily in charge of deploying these technologies. LMS – Uni. Patras will coordinate the involvement of the communication channels established in the EC funded MyCar and Know4Car projects (led by VOLVO) as well as in other FP7 projects, such as VFF, IMAGINE, KAP, e-Custom, FoFdation, Apps4aME and SkillPro and Almende B.V. correspondingly for the FP7 project ARUM (led by EADS), ensuring the sufficient endorsement and participation of the most relevant stakeholders.

This session will provide a clear timeline for the innovation potential (including Technology Readiness Level) of ontology-based, digital manufacturing systems to reach levels of rapid commercial use. Furthermore, the current results of relevant projects will be presented, allowing for additional feedback. Sharing ideas on knowledge management in a networking session of ICT2013 will be extremely beneficiary both for the researchers working on relevant topics as well as for the end users taking part in this session. ICT researchers and developers will have the chance to discuss common issues and limitations and to form plans for aligning their efforts. The outcome of the session will directly provide contributions to the future research and innovation policy of the ICT part in the Factory of the Future work programme.
